Program characteristics and duration:
The MABT is an exciting full immersion program taught by veterinary behaviorists and experienced animal trainers:
2 weeks of intensive learning and real life practice with over 30 different miniature horses, large dogs and chicken.
70% of the program are field practices and animal training sessions.
30% of the program are interactive seminars and case studies.
Personalized learning through 1&1 coaching. No getting lost in the crowd nor repeating stuff you already know!
Specifically designed for students in the fields of animal behavior, animal training, equine science and clinical behavioral medicine.
Highly recommended for young animal trainers, animal behaviorists, horse behaviorists/caretakers/trainers, as well as
prevet/veterinary students with a special interest in the veterinary specialities of animal behavior and welfare.
Throughout the program you will work intensely with animals of all ages and levels of training (mostly horses, but also other farm animals and dogs), In addition, at the beginning of the program you will be assigned two “personal” horses with whom you will work individually on a daily basis, allowing you to track and visualize your own progress as you learn together day by day.
Teaching language is English. No Spanish language knowledge is required.
Our program places great emphasis on learning by doing and 1&1 coaching. Therefore, the number of students admitted to our program is limited to only four students.
By participating in this internship you will:
become skilled in applying science based humane animal training techniques,
gain confidence in designing and implementing individualized animal training and behavior modification programs,
learn how to improve the welfare of farm animals and pets, promote animal health and prevent behavioral problems,
develop your training abilities by working with a variety of animals at different stages of learning,
make a valuable contribution to society by helping train future therapy horses,
improve your curriculum with real life animal behavior and training knowledge and experience.
Animal learning and training foundations (theory and practical applications). Main topics include among others: operant conditioning, emotions in learning, neurobiology of learning, neurobiology of emotions, counterconditioning and systematic desensitization, learned helplessness, non-food rewards, ethics in animal training, positive reinforcement, clicker training, connection training, timing, reinforcement delivery, reinforcement rate, communication clarity, body language, trouble shooting in training, developing individual training plans, record keeping.
Low stress and safe animal handling skills for medical procedures and treatments.
Medical training: train any species (zoo, farm animals and pets) for accepting medical procedures without stress: injections, oral medications, tactile acceptance, oral examination (opening mouth etc.), etc.
Task training skills: learn 7 techniques to train any single behavior. Horse liberty work. Practice skill training: name recognition, loose lead walking, trailer loading/entering a kennel-cage, mat training, ground tying/stay, body targeting, head lowering, obstacles, elimination on cue etc.
Animal welfare applied to working animals, farm animals and pets. Behavioral problems prevention protocols. Environmental enrichment.
Behavior assessment and behavior modification: ethograms, behavior analysis, risk assessment and safety, antecedent modification, protected contact work, desensitization, counterconditioning, clinical behavioral case studies.
MABT internships take place in Asturias, Northern Spain, the so called green paradise of Spain. The nearest airport is the International Asturias Airport (OVD).
MABT is an intensive program. It´s all about learning and growing as a person and future professional, while having tons of fun as well! All MABT program activities take place from Monday till Friday. On Saturdays you enjoy amazing group trips where we explore wild Asturias: from canoeing down the famous Sella river, hiking in the natural reserve of the Picos de Europa to descending into the stunning subterraneous caves of the Asturias mountains, adventure is guaranteed!
Sundays are free for you to enjoy as you wish: sleep in and just relax at the MagicEquus® farm enjoying the miniature horses, go down to the beach or if you want to have even more action, having fun with some of the many additional recreational opportunities available such as: surfing, kayaking, climbing, hiking, horse riding, beach trips, swimming, city trips, etc.

Our internship fee includes:
Full training, mentoring and course material.

Our internship fee excludes:
Flights and visa fees.
Mandatory medical insurance.
Snacks and personal expenses.
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
Once admitted and prior to the start of the program, submitting written proof of health insurance is mandatory.
Previous experience with horses is not required.
All students will be required to sign a liability release to be on MagicEquus® premises.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis - allowing you to apply anytime. For all candidates meeting MABT admission criteria, spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, spaces available are very limited. Therefore, in order to increase your likelihood of securing a seat in case you are accepted, we strongly encourage you to send us your application as early as possible.
How to apply:
- Fill out our online application form and pay the one time 45 € online application fee.
- As soon as we have received your complete application (including application fee and above listed documents), your application request will be evaluated. You will receive an e-mail notification confirming the receipt of your application.
- In no more then 7 days after receiving your admission request, we will notify you via e-mail whether you have been accepted to our program.
- Once accepted, we require you to either pay a 800 € deposit or alternatively your full tuition right away. Please note that any bank transaction fees must be covered by you. Full program payments should be made via bank transfer as stated on the invoice you will receive upon admission, or alternatively via PayPal.
- Please note that your space in the program is not held until your deposit is paid.
- For those that choose to pay a deposit rather then paying right away in full, full payment of the remaining program fee (the total fee minus the deposit) is due the latest 14 days prior to program commencement.
